My Areas of Interest and Expertise
My primary area of interest is working with adults in their mid-20s through early-40s who feel as if their fears and anxieties are holding them back in their lives. Life has a tendency to play out in ways that you don’t expect or want, which can lead to feeling stuck and unhappy.  It seems that everyone else is happy, content, and satisfied, and therefore, they must be doing something that you aren’t.  You feel alone in your struggle to be the type of person that you want to be and have the life that you want. Sometimes you may play the waiting game, hoping that the discontentment will lessen on its own with time. When this doesn’t happen, your fears and insecurities make you feel as if you’re stuck in place and unable to take meaningful steps forward.  Even though you may be doing well enough, you want something better for yourself than “well enough.”

I enjoy helping you to move through these fears to create the life that you want for yourself. Sometimes this means recognizing that some things can’t be or don’t need to be fixed, and focusing on what you can do. I help you to figure out how to respond to the challenges and hurdles in your life so that you can live a life that feels meaningful to you.

My Approach
My approach begins with an accepting, non-judgmental relationship. I want my clients to feel safe to talk about their lives, experiences, challenges, and struggles. I support and empower those I work with in this process of self-exploration and understanding, to allow them to see themselves and their world in a more balanced and accepting way.  I want to help my clients be more authentic and to act in a way that fits with who they truly are, and not who they or others think they should be.

I expect you to be willing to talk about and reflect on your experiences to understand the common patterns of response you may have. This could be ways in which you perceive and think about the world, how you cope with difficult or stressful situations, or even how you interact with others. We all develop certain habits in how we deal with things but not all of those habits are helpful, and some can hold us back in life. As you come to understand yourself, I provide support to help you make choices and act in a way that fits with what is important. I also integrate mindfulness into my work as a way of helping people learn how to be more present and flexible with their attention, accepting of themselves, in touch with what is important and what gets in their way, and intentional in their responses to life’s challenges.

My Education and Experience

I completed my doctoral degree in counseling psychology at Indiana University. During that time, I had several years of training experience where I worked in a variety of settings, including community mental health and university counseling centers. Following my training, I completed my internship at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Subsequently, I went on to work as a post-doctoral fellow and, later, a full-time staff psychologist at West Virginia University. I made the transition to full-time private practice in 2015.
