Have you been considering making the switch to private practice but feel too anxious or overwhelmed to take the plunge?
Does the freedom of private practice sound appealing to you, but you worry about the business aspects or whether you’ll be able to pay the bills?
Is agency work sapping your energy, but you don’t even know where to start in making a change?
My Story When I made the transition to private practice three years ago, I was incredibly excited. I couldn’t wait to have more freedom and flexibility in my job and to be able to create my own rules and schedule. At the same time, I was extremely anxious. During the first few weeks of private practice, when the contacts felt like they were coming in at a trickle, I started creating back-up plans for how I could pay my bills, like getting a business loan or taking a part-time job. Fortunately, it never came to that, and I also had a friend who was able to calm my anxiety, assuring me that the clients would come. However, as time progressed and I settled into private practice, there were things that I learned about private practice that I wish I had known at the beginning, things that probably would have helped me to build my practice much faster than I had. I also learned tools that helped me to be more efficient, create more balance, and make my work more fulfilling. Some of these included the following:
Finding out what a niche is and figuring out how to advertise towards one
Designing a website so that the clients I wanted ended up finding it and reading it
Networking as an introvert
Setting boundaries with clients who weren’t appropriate for me to see
Setting no-show and late cancellation fees
Finding ways to make my practice more efficient and less time-consuming
Developing ways to minimize costs
Given my experiences, I have become passionate about helping other practitioners to create the lives that they want for themselves, particularly in regards to work. I’ve found it extremely fulfilling to help friends and colleagues make the shift to private practice and have them come to me afterwards, telling me how thankful they are that they made the switch. I love being able to help clinicians skip the trials and tribulations that I went through so that they can have the practice that they want sooner rather than later.
